Symposium #5

Spine Educational Standards

Subject overview

Continuing education is a demand in all professions, but it assumes particular relevance in health sciences, in order to ensure that professionals maintain their skills and competence, while they learn about new and developing areas in their field.
In the particular case of spine care, knowledge advances at a fast pace and treatments frequently involve a multidisciplinary team.
Each professional must understand his/her role within the team and be aligned with the treatment goals, in order to convey a coherent message to the patient. Hence, continuing education in an interdisciplinary environment becomes imperative to ensure the best healthcare for patients with spinal problems.
Postgraduate curricula for professionals treating spine patients must
be standardized, so that it is possible to evaluate and compare results, optimize resources and provide value-based healthcare. On the other hand, educational standards and curricula must adapt to the most prevalent spine-related conditions in the population, the needs and priorities of the health system and the available resources.
