SPINAL CORD INJURY REHABILITATION IN THE POST COVID ERA

Subject overview

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a world-wide problem with variable epidemiology based on a variety of socio-economic factors. There are also significant local, regional, and national variations in the care of patients with SCI. Because of the lack of available resources in some areas of the world, those with SCI are provided little to no rehabilitation or equipment such as mobility devices. This can lead to limited functional recovery, poor quality of life, decreased involvement in society roles, institutionalization, disability and increased costs (both direct and indirect). The care of individuals with SCI has also been impacted by the global COVID pandemic: this includes patients avoiding health care facilities, health care resources being re-directed, and provision of necessary equipment being negatively impacted by logistical issues. SPINE 20 is committed to working to improve the care provided to patients with SCI.

1. Discuss how SCI is an important global health issue
2. Understand how rehabilitation for SCI can be a benefit for all G-20 nations
3. Understand process for development of appropriate SCI care in areas lacking services
