In the early seventeenth century, the Dutch established New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan. England took control in 1664 and renamed the settlement New York. Its exceptional harbor and access to the Hudson River helped the city grow rapidly as a center of trade, migration and enterprise.<\/p>\n      <p>New York played a prominent role in the formation of the United States and briefly served as the nation&rsquo;s capital from 1785 to 1790. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 strengthened its connection to the country&rsquo;s interior, accelerating commerce and population growth.
